Transition to Medical School

Welcome to the VCU School of Medicine family!

Transition to Medical School will provide a wonderful opportunity to get to know your classmates and make an early adjustment to the medical school environment.  Early acculturation has been directly associated with success in medical school.

As we anxiously await your arrival, please take a look at our Virtual Second Look. This website is the place to check for information on Transition to Medical School, Transition to Medical School Checklist, VIP Dates, Housing, FAQs, etc. You'll find additional information such as the International/Inner City/Rural Preceptorship Program (I2CRP) and many opportunities at the VCU School of Medicine and in the City of Richmond.

Updates and changes will be made on a fairly regular basis and we would suggest that you check it weekly. We will email you to let you know of special additions to the page that may require your immediate attention.

Every year some students tell me they didn't know about one thing or another that they were supposed to do or take care of...everything that needs to be done will be mentioned on the Transition to Medical School Checklist. The checklist is divided by "What to do BEFORE Transition to Medical School", "What to do DURING Transition to Medical School", and "What to do AFTER Transition to Medical School." So be very sure to check it regularly.

VCU requires all full-time students to provide proof of immunization. Immunizations should be completed and submitted prior to your arrival. Please complete the VCU Health Sciences Student Immunization Requirements form. Once completed, please use the Student Health Web Portal to submit your records. If you have any questions, please contact University Student Health Services at 804-828-9220.

If you have additional questions pertaining to housing, curriculum, SOM campus, City of Richmond, etc., please email our Tour Guide Directors at mcvtg2025@gmail.com.

We look forward to working with you over the next several months to make your transition to medical school as comfortable as possible.

Best,

Michelle Y. Whitehurst-Cook, M.D.

Senior Associate Dean for Admissions School of Medicine

YOU'LL MEET...

Your Transition to Medical School Leaders will help facilitate your Transition to Medical School day activities, such as picking up your white coat and clicker. You will also meet faculty and team members from your college and other campus departments, current VCU students, and other new students attending Transition to Medical School.

YOU'LL DISCOVER...

Learn about resources that make "unparalleled access" more than just a phrase. No matter your background or your career ambition, we have what you need to fit into the academic and social environment of VCU. And because VCU is an important part of the community, you'll learn what the city of Richmond has to offer, and how you can fit into the civic community.

YOU'LL INVESTIGATE...

Learning isn’t just hitting the books. It’s connecting with people whose interests are similar to yours but whose backgrounds may be different. It’s trying something new. It’s using your academic major interests to support your community by volunteering. During Transition to Medical School, you’ll learn about opportunities for all of that, and more. We’ll help you understand the student experience, including what you can expect. You’ll learn about student life, helpful resources, opportunities for student involvement, and more.

We know that you will find Richmond to be an easy place to find housing and home furnishings. There are a variety of housing resources available and we strongly urge you to connect with the regular housing sources such as the Richmond Times-Dispatch, Style Weekly Magazine, The Apartment Locator, The Apartment Guide and the area real estate publications. The views of the apartment complexes and other companies are NOT the views of VCU School of Medicine.

Apartment List has assisted many VCU students to find housing over the years. The Richmond Times-Dispatch website is www.TimesDispatch.com. Once entering the website, go to Real Estate, then Apts & Rentals. Real Estate Services are also available on this page. The Style Weekly Magazine is a helpful magazine, www.styleweekly.com. Go to classified, then rental, and finally look under the VCU area. The GSC Apartment Locator, www.gscapts.com. Once entering the website, click on Richmond. For more information, call 800-368-7669 to speak with a representative, or email them at contactva@gscapts.com. The Apartment Guide is a very useful guide, www.apartmentguide.com.
