Department of Family Medicine's Dr. Denée Moore named president of statewide advocacy organization
Moore will serve an annual term as the 77th president of the Virginia Academy of Family Physicians.

Denée J. Moore, M.D., assistant professor and M3 clerkship director in the Department of Family Medicine, has been named the 77th president of the Virginia Academy of Family Physicians (VAFP) for the 2023-2024 term.
Since its founding in 1948, VAFP advocates for current and future family physicians practicing in Virginia through professional development, legislative involvement and student engagement.
“It is an honor to serve as president of the Virginia Academy of Family Physicians," Moore said. “This organization has been pivotal to my development as a person, a clinician educator, and an advocate for patients, colleagues, learners and the specialty of family medicine.”
Prior to becoming president, Moore served as both second and first vice president of VAFP consecutively since 2020. She was installed as president by past VAFP president and retired VCU family medicine colleague Michelle Whitehurst-Cook, M.D. During her time leading the organization, Moore said her goals are to generate solutions that streamline patient care; reward physicians for improving health outcomes and the patient experience; increase the number family medicine physicians entering the field; enhance patient safety; integrate technology to advance care delivery; and restore joy to the practice of medicine.
In her first president’s message, Moore introduced the pilot of the VAFP Family Medicine Practice Transformation Grant Initiative, which provides grant funding to projects within family medicine practices that “enhance the patient experience or support the delivery of the highest level of care to patients.”
A 2013 VCU School of Medicine alum herself, Moore completed her residency training in 2016 at the VCU-affiliated Bon Secours St. Francis Family Medicine Residency Program. She returned to her alma mater to serve as the M-3 Clerkship Director for Family Medicine, a role she has held since August 2020. Moore’s work focuses on healthcare disparities in underserved communities, particularly in communities of color.
