Our mission is to improve health through exceptional and innovative discovery, training and patient care. With the help of our strategic plan, we will achieve our vision of being known for the accomplishments of our trainees, faculty, staff and alumni in research, education and patient care.

The core values that guide our conduct, performance and decision-making are:

  • Education and lifelong learning
  • Respect and integrity
  • Diversity and inclusion
  • Communication and collaboration
  • Innovation and technology
  • Community engagement

Our research

With $183.41 million in funding during FY21, VCU School of Medicine researchers account for half of VCU’s sponsored research awards. Our school’s 2021–2025 strategic plan seeks to develop and support collaborative science that builds on our strengths in cancer, neurosciences, cardiovascular disease, liver disease and metabolic health.

Our care

Through the VCU Health System, we provide comprehensive, safe and high-quality care to patients from across Virginia as well as neighboring states. We are central Virginia’s only academic medical center and the largest single provider of indigent health care in the commonwealth. VCU Health also includes the region’s only Level I trauma center verified in adult, pediatric and burn trauma care, and is recognized internationally for organ transplantation, head and spinal cord trauma, heart care, burn healing, pediatrics and cancer treatment.
