Dear Colleagues-Friends,
It is our great pleasure to share that Dr. Cathy Grossman, who has been serving as the interim medical director of the Center for Human Simulation and Patient Safety, has been named to this role permanently.
Dr. Grossman, an associate professor in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, came to VCU in 2000 for her residency in internal medicine before completing her fellowship in pulmonary and critical care. She then joined our faculty in 2006.
Dr. Grossman has been teaching in the Center for Human Simulation and Patient Safety almost since the day it opened in 2009, at first working with fellows in the Pulmonary Critical Care Division and then other housestaff in the Department of Internal Medicine to enhance both their training and patient safety. She also was a leader in developing the simulation component of Walk the Walk, our school’s intern orientation and safety culture program.
In 2016, Dr. Grossman was called upon to serve as the center’s interim medical director following the retirement of Dr. Ellen Brock. Under Dr. Grossman’s leadership, the Center for Human Simulation and Patient Safety has continued to thrive as a core educational facility for our school and health system and was recently reaccredited for a five-year term as an Accredited Education Institute by the American College of Surgery. The center also has hosted several CME events, which has increased the center’s profitability. In addition, the center continues to be a highlight of Alumni Weekend for colleagues returning to our campus.
Dr. Grossman is an exemplary educator, a skillful clinician and an innovative thinker. We are so grateful for all she has already accomplished and are pleased that she will continue to lead our Center for Human Simulation and Patient Safety in the future.
Please join us in congratulating her.
With all good wishes,
Peter F. Buckley, M.D.
