Dear Colleagues-Friends,
This week marked the beginning of the next stage of training for our newest resident and fellow colleagues. In all, 180 interns and new residents and 93 fellows have joined our ranks. Our incoming residents represent 62 different U.S. and 10 international medical schools, plus many more when you include our fellows and those positions filled outside of the main match. You can see a map of the main match results below.
Few aspects of medical education are as intense – or as rewarding – as the years spent as a resident and fellow. Over the coming days, our newest colleagues will face new responsibilities, demanding schedules and a myriad of unfamiliar people and processes as they begin their training in our hospitals and clinics. Because of this, they will be looking to your experience, guidance and expertise to realize their full potential as practicing physicians, scientific thinkers and community leaders.
We are confident that our incoming residents and fellows will contribute to their chosen specialties with the poise, curiosity, compassion and resilience that helped them succeed throughout their medical education endeavors, especially as they were forced to adapt to the challenges of a global pandemic. COVID-19 has provided invaluable lessons and remarkable clinical and human experiences that will stay with them throughout their lives and careers. This surely will be a generation of great doctors as a result.
