I am pleased to announce the appointment of Scott P. Stringer, M.D., M.S., FACS, to serve as vice dean for the VCU School of Medicine.
Dr. Stringer has served as president of MCV Physicians and senior associate dean for clinical affairs since April 2024, and will continue in those roles in addition to his duties as vice dean.
In just one year, Dr. Stringer’s experience and management skills have helped advance our mission to deliver compassionate care, innovative research and engaged teaching across the practice plan, and to those we serve throughout the health system. He has been instrumental in improving the alignment of MCVP and SOM. He has led the development and implementation of a new clinical compensation plan and increased the operational efficiency of the practice plan. And he has overseen the reestablishment of the MCVP leadership team, recruiting a chief operating officer, associate vice president for compensation and analytics, and associate vice president for operations.
As vice dean, Dr. Stringer will be my partner in the design and execution of our strategic plan. He will further align MCVP and faculty affairs to ensure a better process in the ease of hiring physicians. And he will be my designee in SOM operations when I am otherwise indisposed.
Prior to arriving at VCU, Dr. Stringer was a tenured professor at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, where he served as the chair of the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery for 23 years. He previously served as chief physician executive/chief ambulatory physician, associate vice chancellor for clinical affairs and president of University Physicians.
Dr. Stringer graduated from Texas A&M University and received his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, where he was president of the Alpha Omega Alpha Society. He remained at Southwestern Medical Center for his residency in general surgery and otolaryngology. He also holds a Master of Science in Administrative Medicine from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and is a diplomate of the American Board of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.
Dr. Stringer’s service to the profession runs deep. He was secretary-treasurer of the American Academy of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery for four years and has served on more than a dozen committees since joining that organization in 1984. He is also an American College of Surgeons Fellow and a current member of the American Rhinologic Society, the Society of University Otolaryngologists-Head and Neck Surgeons. and the Group for Faculty Practice of the Association of the American Medical Colleges. He served as president of both the Association of Academic Departments of Otolaryngology and the Society of University Otolaryngologists-Head and Neck Surgeons.
Dr. Stringer serves on the editorial board of the American Journal of Otolaryngology. He has delivered 194 regional, national and international presentations, has 152 refereed publications and has authored 33 book chapters in his field. He received the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Presidential Citation in 2006, the Triological Society Vice-Presidential Citation in 2014, and the American Academy of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery Foundation Distinguished Service Award in 2019. During his career, he has received the departmental faculty teacher of the year award 11 times. Outside of work, Dr. Stringer enjoys running, kayaking, guitar, and playing with his grandchildren.
