Winter 2024-25 feature stories

By embedding a teamwork mindset early and often, the Center for Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Care teaches future physicians, nurses and pharmacists to rely on one another's strengths for the good of their patients - eschewing the stereotypes and hierarchies that have historically impeded health care.

A decade after the first ice bucket challenge, the VCU Health ALS Clinic is still making an annual splash — and ramping up research, diagnosis and treatment on the national stage.

Scott M. Strayer, M'94, H'97, is a champion — and an exemplar — of the breadth of practice available to family medicine physicians. As the Harris-Mayo Chair of the School of Medicine's Department of Family Medicine and Population Health, Strayer draws on the experiences of his multicultural childhood to help shape his current role as leader, mentor and educator.

Philanthropically supported pilot grant awards pave the way for scientists and physician researchers to complete early stage studies that provide preliminary proof of concept data needed to secure competitive national funding and drive larger-scale research.

The Class of 2027's Kealani Unkel remembers how her tour proved to be a major point in her decision to attend VCU School of Medicine, in large part because the guides described such a close-knit community where she could see herself fitting in. Now she shares her experiences with potential fellow students, hoping to make the same impression on them.

Theresa Jones Pugh, M'01, harnesses equestrian skills to equip humans to overcome trauma and serious illness. Horses can open up feelings that can't be accessed in regular therapy, she says. “They have no judgement.”
