Ambulatory Clerkship
The goal of the VCU Ambulatory Clerkship is to provide students with the opportunity to evaluate and care for patients in the ambulatory setting and to become familiar with the complexities of longitudinal outpatient care, with a focus on diagnostic and therapeutic decision making, cost effectiveness, wellness/prevention, inter-professional care coordination, disease prevention, and patient -physician communication.

- Gather relevant patient information and perform a physical examination in the ambulatory setting.
- Describe the appropriate use of screening and diagnostic tests and application of preventative and therapeutic strategies.
- Apply the “Quadruple Aim” framework to deliver high-value care.
- Discuss the structure and processes of healthcare systems and mechanisms for improvement.
- Proactively solicit and incorporate feedback and engage in critical self-reflection to aid in the ongoing development of one's own professional identity.
- Employ effective written and verbal communication with patients, their families, and members of the healthcare team to promote culturally responsive, patient-centered care.
- Collaborate with patients, their families, and members of the healthcare team to cultivate an environment that respects all individuals.
- Engage in professional behaviors, including ethical decision making, accountability, responsibility, honesty, and integrity in all clinical and education environments.
- Utilize available resources to effectively manage patient information and incorporate evidence-based medicine to deliver high-value care.
